Driving from San Diego to San Francisco?

I am driving from san diego to san fran to get on my cruise ship. Any cool places along the way I should check out? We want to stay the night somewhere along the way or in San Fran any suggetions? We will leave early Friday and have to be on the ship at 2pm the next day, so not much time but would like to know what to do. Thanks!
