Why was NATO created?

NATO was formed to oppose Soviet aggression. If the Soviet tanks rolled against western Europe NATO would be ready. The Soviets formed the Warsaw Pact to protect eastern Europe. These two groups are the framework for the Cold War stand-off. The April, 1949, Berlin airlift led directly to the formation of NATO.
