What happened to Stevie Nicks' voice during the 1980's?

She had such a gorgeous voice in the seventies and still sounded very good on Fleetwood Mac's "Mirage" album of 1982, but if you listen to her from the 1990's she sounds so nasally. What happened? Was it drugs?
