What influence has Jay Z had on hip hop that is of any significance?
He signed Rick Ross and Young Jeezy to Def Jam. Both glorify dope dealing. I always hear people talk about how influential Jay Z has been to hip hop. I would like for someone to point out any Nas or Tupac type uplifting song this "older more mature" artist has made a video for and pushed out to the mes. Every great rapper like Tupac, KRS 1, Rakim, Chuck D, Nas, Ice Cube, Ice T, Scarface, 8ball & MJG, Jada Kiss, Outkast and Kanye West have pushed a substance song out to the mes. Greats like LL Cool J, Run DMC, DMX with "slippin", Snoop "with Beautiful" and others have made songs without any reference to drug dealing. Biggie made songs like "Juicy and Skies is the Limit" were he keeps his drug references limited and he died at 24. Jigga didn't get big until he was 27. Yet he talks about drugs, clothes, bling and women. To me Jigga is the greatest hip hop gimmick of them all. The old school sees how he pimped the young genaration. He told yall he was great and yall believed him.
